15 August 2026
On 5 August 2026, our Tracks & Dales walking group enjoyed a fantastic hike around Tarn Hows in the heart of the Lake District.
The group was created in partnership with Tracks & Dales to provide a more challenging walking experience for experienced visually impaired walkers from Barrow Buddies. Alongside developing confidence and outdoor skills, the group places a strong focus on mental health, wellbeing and enjoying the benefits of being active outdoors.
Exploring Tarn Hows
The walk was led by Lauren, an experienced outdoor enthusiast who takes part in sight-guided triathlons and brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the group.
Following an accessible route around Tarn Hows, the group enjoyed the beautiful Lake District scenery while learning about the local flora and fauna. Lauren also shared fascinating information about how plants and natural resources were traditionally used in the area.
Connecting with Nature
The walk also included a mindfulness activity, giving everyone the opportunity to pause and reflect on what nature means to them and the things they are grateful for.
Taking a moment to slow down, connect with the surroundings and reflect on our thoughts and feelings proved to be a really positive experience for the group.
The Importance of Volunteers
Our volunteer Dawn played an important role throughout the walk, encouraging everyone to get involved and putting her sight-guide training into practice. Her support helped make the session accessible, enjoyable and rewarding for everyone taking part.
By the end of the walk, the group felt refreshed, positive and grateful for the experience.
It was another great example of how walking, nature, friendship and supportive volunteering can make a real difference to wellbeing.
We’re already looking forward to our next Tracks & Dales adventure!
